National Diploma
Goals:
The National Diploma in Office Technology/and Management is a two-year programme designed to equip
students with Secretarial/Office skills for employment in various fields of endeavour. Students of this programme are exposed to courses in their special areas as well as courses in general education.
In addition to the acquisition of vocational skills in Office Technology and Management, the students are equipped with effective work competencies and socio-psychological work skills, which are very essential in everyday interactions with other.
The National Diploma programme in office students and other interested individuals are eligible to enroll in Office Technology and Management Technology courses.
Objectives:
The grand objectives of the programme therefore are:
1. Acquisition of Secretarial Skills.
This includes at the ND level, the ability to:
(a) Write in Shorthand for three minutes varied materials of 1.3 syllabic
intensity dictated at 80 wam and transcribed on the typewriter with a
minimum of 95% accuracy.
(b) Type effectively various office jobs and acquire a copying rate of 40 wam
on passages not below 1.30 syllabic intensity with 98% accuracy.
(c) Fit properly into the office of any organization and perform professionally,
the functions of a Secretary which among others include - relating the functions of the office to the whole organization, attending meetings and providing information as may be required; make accurate records of proceedings, filing and retrieving information, taking appropriate action
independently when faced with challenging secretarial office problems, showing personal qualities and attributes conducive to tolerance and coexistence with the work group and, at the HND level, the ability to:
(i) Acquisition of General Education.
(ii) Laying Foundation for Advanced Studies
The general entry requirements for Office Technology and Management ND & HND programmes are:
a) Admission into National Diploma (ND) programme:
English Language, Mathematics, and any Three (3) of the following: Economics/Commerce, Accountings/Book-Keeping. Geography/Literature in English, Government, Agricultural Science/ Biology, Yoruba, CRK/IRK, Office Practice, Chemistry/ Physics, Business Methods. Typewriting, Shorthand
b) Admission into Higher National Diploma (HND) programme:
English Language, Mathematics, and any Three (3) of the following: Economics/Commerce, Accountings/Book-Keeping. Geography/Literature in English, Government, Agricultural Science/ Biology, Yoruba, CRK/IRK, Office Practice, Chemistry/ Physics, Business Methods. Typewriting, Shorthand
National Diploma in Office Technology and Management/Secretarial Administration at Lower Credit or above plus 1-year Post-ND Industrial attachment or in exceptional cases, candidates with a Pass and 2 years Industrial attachment may be considered.
The programme will be for 4 Semesters that will be done within 2 years (minimum) & maximum of 4 years . Institutions will award the Diploma certificates to candidates who successfully completed the programme after passing prescribed courseworks, examination, projects and the supervised industrial work experience. Such candidates should have completed between 76-116 semester credit units as prescribed in the programme.
Diplomas shall be classified as follows:
- Distinction – GPA of 3.50 and above
- Upper Credit – GPA of 3.00 – 3.49
- Lower Credit – GPA of 2.50 – 2.99
- Pass – GPA of 2.00 – 2.49
- Fail – GPA of below 2.00
It should be emphasized that the National Diploma (ND) programme is terminal and candidates graduating from the programme should be able to perform at that level. Each Diploma programme is expected to run for 4 semesters of 17 weeks each. For the first two years, a candidate must take at least six courses per semester (Minimum of 18 credit units while the maximum varies between 28 and 30). While for the remaining two years candidates can take minimum 0 credit unit and maximum of 12 credit units per semester.
The Higher National Diploma (HND) programme is expected to run for 4 semesters of 17 weeks each, For the first two years, a candidate must take at least six courses per semester (Minimum of 18 credit units while the maximum varies between 29 and 30). While for the remaining two years candidates can take minimum 0 credit unit and maximum of 12 credit units per semester.
The curriculum of the diploma programme consists of four main components viz:
A. The General Education component includes courses in Social Sciences Studies/Mathematics/ English Language /Communication, Citizenship. Entrepreneurship.
B. Foundation Courses include Economics, Quantitative Techniques, Statistics, and Law etc.
C. Professional Courses are specialized core courses which give the student the theory and practical skills he needs to practice in his field of specialization at the technician/technological level.
D. Final year (ND & HND) students in this programme are expected to carry out individual project work (not term paper). This should be produced and bounded by the student. Projects supervisors will be assigned to each students.
